- פַּיִיסm. (פִּיס) division, (cmp. פּוּר, a. בָּצַע) compromise, arbitration, esp. by counting out a certain number on the raised fingers of those among whom a decision is to be made (v. צָבַע Hif.), allotment. Yoma II, 2 התקינו … אלא בפ׳ it was ordained that the cleansing of the altar should not be done (by whosoever was the first to reach it) but according to arbitration by counting Ib. וזה הפ׳ הראשון and this was the first arbitration (on the Day of Atonement). Ib. 3 הפ׳ השני מיוכ׳ the second count was to decide who was to slaughter ; a. fr.Pl. פְּיָיסוֹת. Ib. 2 ארבע פ׳ היו שם four times arbitration took place there (on the Day of Atonement).
